I am currently a Ph.D. Candidate studying poultry nutrition under the supervision of Dr. Elijah Kiarie. I completed my M.Sc. in 2002 and entered the feed industry as a commercial poultry nutritionist working to develop feed programs that maximize performance while also maintaining good gut health and welfare objectives. As consumer demand causes the poultry industry to reduce or eliminate its use of antibiotics, nutritionists must identify alternative feeding strategies to support gut health. The primary concerns associated with antibiotic-free feeding programs are increased incidence of enteric diseases, impaired nutrient absorption, increased mortality and increased condemnations at the processing plant. From a research perspective, there is a lack of comparative data on indices such as growth, blood biochemistry, body composition and gut morphology of birds raised on conventional and alternative feeding programs to characterize differences in gut health.
My research is designed to generate a comprehensive understanding of the impact of various commercial feeding programs on the health status of broiler chickens. This research will evaluate and benchmark various bird health parameters as indicators of gut health to demonstrate that different feeding programs have a direct impact on gut physiology, and as a result, influence blood biochemistry and skeletal health coinciding with disease resistance and overall growth performance.
During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two children, riding horses and crocheting.
