The Canadian beef breeds took the offer from AAFC and formed Canadian Beef Improvement (CBI) in Calgary, Alberta. After three years they were unable to keep an organization going. Each beef breed association has decided to either send their data to one of several genetic evaluation service groups in the United States or to not have any genetic evaluations at all. Beef Improvement Ontario (BIO) did national evaluations for the Salers and Blonde d'Aquitaine breeds.
CGIL has developed close ties with Beef Improvement Ontario (BIO) on their genetic evaluation programs and in the development of mate selection strategies via the internet. The genetic evaluation system is a multiple trait, multiple breed system that includes data from station tested bulls as well as herd performance data. BIO has also contributed to bridging of a faculty position in beef cattle breeding (Dr. Steve Miller). BIO is also a partner along with CDN, INTERBULL, and CGIL in funding a research position for the study of international comparisons of dairy and beef cattle.
