1988 Breeding Strategies for Beef Cattle

Wayne Gearheart and Charlie Smith

The naturally low reproductive performance of beef cows has restricted the amount of selection pressure which can be applied to females and sib production with most conventional breeding structures. The use of MOET and embryo splitting techniques and a proposed nucleus herd of elite sires and dams can increase the theoretical annual genetic response of selection for economically important traits. Greater female selection intensities and increased selection accuracy are possible with MOET and embryo splitting schemes. The eventual dissemination of genetics from the nucleus herd to commercial herds through selection of superior sires and dams can lead to improvements in commercial herds.
