Development of a Curriculum for Scientific Diving to meet occupational SCUBA standards and regulations

ABSTRACT

Ontario has a unique regulatory environment for Scientific Diving. Any underwater work in Ontario is classified as commercial diving and must comply with National and international commercial diving standards. This creates a complex set of objectives that Scientific divers must meet during operations, and in training. The Ontario Universities Dive Program has been put in place to train divers in the use of modified commercial diving techniques, to allow scientists to conduct underwater research using SCUBA, while meeting Provincial regulations as well as national and international standards.

Where They Are Now

After graduating, Torben worked as a research assistant for the University of Guelph. He assisted with Professor Moccia’s Aquaculture courses, and with undergrad research projects, and research projects at the Alma Aquaculture research station.

Torben now works as a Biologist at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans research station in Saint Andrews New Brunswick. He works as part of a team using remote camera systems and diving, to survey benthic habitats to protect ecologically sensitive benthic habitats, and to propose regions which may be suitable for further protection.
