Teaching
- Introduction to
Quantitative Genetics - MBG-3060DE
An introduction to the nature of the
implications of and how to analyze genetic variation within contemporary
populations. The course covers topics like Mendelian genetics, selection,
migration, sampling, inbreeding, relationships, breeding values and QTL
detection. The format is distance learning with extensive use of e-Learning resources.
Next offered Winter 2011
- Genetics of Companion Animals - ANSC-4020
A fourth year capstone course that explores the genetic improvement of companion species. For this course,
companion species are defined as those species where there is no large-scale genetic improvement program
in place so everything needs to be designed by the breeder. This includes dogs, cats, horses, donkeys,
llamas and other camelids, captive wild species and so forth. We explore how to design and implement
a breeding program while taking into account the size of the population, any unusual biology of the
species and any other special circumstances. We also touch on genetic conservation, morally and ethically responsible
breeding decisions and the legislation governing purebred registrations and establishing a new breed.
