Dr. Angela Cánovas is currently (from June 15th, 2015) Assistant Professor of Beef Cattle and Small Ruminant Genomics at University of Guelph, Ontario Agricultural College and part of the Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL). She received the undergraduate degree in 2006 in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Lleida (Spain). She implemented her formation on statistics coursing the module of Quantitative Genetics, master of Animal Breeding and Biotechnology of Reproduction at Polytechnic University of Valencia (2008).
In 2011, she completed her Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics at the Research Institute of Technology Food & Agriculture (IRTA) on functional genomics to study genes associated with meat quality and fat deposition and composition in pigs obtaining several national and international awards from the International Society of Animal Genetics. During her Ph.D. studies she also had the opportunity of being a visiting student at University of Bristol (UK), Iowa State University (USA) and University of California-Davis (USA). After completing her Ph.D., she did a short postdoc at University of Zaragoza (Spain) working on quantitative genetics and statistical genomics and then she moved to University of California-Davis with Dr. Juan F. Medrano as a Fulbright post-doctoral researcher (2012-2015) to expand her knowledge in bioinformatics, Next Generation sequencing and RNA-Sequencing as well as Systems Biology in cattle.
Before moving to University of Guelph Dr. Cánovas had a joint research position at U.C. Davis and Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), University Autonomous of Barcelona at the department of Animal Genomics and Bioinformatics within the context of the Juan de la Cierva program. Through her background in molecular genetics and cellular biology, acquired during her Ph.D., combined with the Systems Biology and bioinformatics using the most novel high throughput -OMICS technologies during her postdoc at U.C. Davis, she has developed extensive statistical and bioinformatics skills and a solid knowledge base in Next Generation Sequencing and animal Systems Biology in beef cattle and other livestock species.
She has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers, many of them in a high impact journals. Dr. Cánovas future plans are to expand her area of scientific research to the field of animal Systems Biology combining statistical genomics and bioinformatics with further functional validation of regulatory target genes. She feels there is unique opportunity to understand the nature of complex phenotypes in animals by taking advantage of new throughput technologies in genomics. Using a Systems Biology approaches she will integrate metabolic pathway analysis to develop testable hypothesis in relation to the regulation of gene networks associated with economically important traits in beef cattle necessary to enhance and accelerate innovation in Canada’s beef industry. She feels it is also very important to make a conscious effort to translate research achievements into instructional material, and sharing advancements with producers and other industry stakeholders in order to have more feedback between the different sectors of the beef cattle industry.
