Good afternoon CGIL,

This week we are happy to have Dr. Yuri Utsunomiya, a Senior Genomics Research Scientist at ST genetics, presenting for us on Friday, February 16th, 2024. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The presentation title is: “Genomics in Animal Breeding: Transitioning from Basic Science to Applied Technology”.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Yuri Utsunomiya holds DVM, MSc and PhD degrees in Veterinary Medicine from the Sao Paulo State University (Unesp). During his undergraduate studies, he worked for the Bovine Genome Sequencing and Analysis Consortium in the annotation of the first bovine reference genome assembly. During his graduate studies, he worked for the Zebu Genome Consortium, an international initiative that pioneered the implementation of Genomic Selection in zebu cattle in Brazil. He was also a visiting scholar in many labs abroad, including Italy (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), UK (University of Nottingham), USA (ARS-USDA) and Austria (Universität für Bodenkultur). After finishing his PhD, Dr. Utsunomiya became a lecturer for the Graduate Program in Animal Sciences from the School of Veterinary Medicine of Araçatuba (Unesp), where he teaches Statistics and Bioinformatics, apart from supervising graduate students. He serves as Associate Editor for Animal Genetics, the official journal of the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG), as well as an expert consultant in international missions organized by the Joint FAO/IAEA Programme to deliver training in genomic data analysis in research institutes in South America. In the private sector, Dr. Utsunomiya worked as a consultant and a shareholder at AgroPartners Consulting, a startup company based in Brazil that deploys genomics in Agribusiness. In 2022, Dr. Utsunomiya joined STgenetics as Senior Genomics Research Scientist, where he helps designing, developing and deploying genomics-derived technologies, products and services for the dairy and beef cattle industries. To date, Dr. Utsunomiya has published 71 articles in peer-reviewed international journals in collaboration with researchers from 10 different countries and holds an H-index of 29. Most of these articles involved the use of Genomics to study genetic variation in animals, especially cattle and dogs.
