Welcome to Animal Biosciences. I am so happy to be able to welcome you to this amazing community at the University of Guelph. Well, today marks the start of our journey together in Animal Biosciences. I am here to help you figure out where things are and who the key people are to help you in your transition. It is critical to know where to find knowledge and information since the university can be a huge and complex place.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. There are many people on campus and in the department that can help and provide support when you are struggling; in some cases you may need to speak up and ask for help. So, don't be afraid to ask - this is what we are all here for. We hope that you will feel supported, that you have fun, that you will learn a great deal, and that you will quickly think of Animal Biosciences as your "home away from home".
It is important to get connected with your Advisors, Faculty, Groups on Campus, Clubs, and your resident community. Have fun and build connections. Remember, we are all here to ease your transition.

Whether you have previously studied at Guelph or you come from another university, we as the Department of Animal Biosciences welcome you. We hope that the resources found on this website can provide you with useful information in easing the transition. First things first, here are some things you should know and do!
Every graduate student will receive a desk and a desk key (if drawers included) upon arrival. You are also required to obtain keys for the rooms and laboratories you will be occupying for the duration of your program. The policy for keys requires that you deposit $10 per individual key.
There are various study rooms and spaces throughout our building with desks that can be assigned to you. Please see Wendy in the Main Office and ask for a tour of all available spaces.
All graduate students in Animal Biosciences are automatically subscribed to two listservs with which mass communications are circulated. The listservs are: ABSC@listserv.uoguelph.ca (Department-wide) and ABSC-GRA@listserv.uoguelph.ca (Graduate student-exclusive). The Graduate Secretary forwards a wide range of emails from internal as well as external organizations, along with automated reminders of various social and academic events taking place within the department (via firstname.lastname@example.org).
It is a good idea to keep your Gryph Mail organized, as many emails can be sent through these two listservs daily. It is also advised to read each email's title carefully, as often times both listservs can deliver important information regarding scholarship/award/fellowship/grant opportunities, including their deadlines. Many notices regarding departmental seminars, meetings and defences are also sent through these.
An advisory committee consisting of at least two faculty members with varying expertise needs to be established before the halfway mark of your second semester. As these members will be helping to guide you throughout your graduate program, you should see your advisor to discuss who are appropriate to be in your committee.

It is a good idea for you to approach your advisor about which courses to take over your graduate program. Graduate-level courses are quite specialized and thus are often only offered in one semester per year. Ensure that you schedule accordingly with your research in order to make your semesters' workloads manageable.
In order for you to register any university courses, it must be done through WebAdvisor. Log in using your assigned Central Login ID and password, and course registration is under the Students Menu.
There is a certain number of courses that you must take and there are distinctions between by Coursework and by Thesis students if you are enrolled in a Master's program. Please see the Courses page on our Graduate Students section for more details on program requirements, semesterly requirements and mandatory courses.
There are many scholarship opportunities out there, and it would be worth checking all of them out to help you pay for your program. Most of these awards have early deadlines and are awarded the following semester upon applying for them, thus it is important to pay attention to deadlines and frequently check your Gryph Mail regarding schedule of dates.

The staff at the Main Office, particularly our Graduate Secretary, are available to assist you at any point in your graduate program. Come down and shoot them a question! You can find information regarding who you should go to for specific questions on the Administrative Staff page.
