Albeit dramatically different in structure compared to the undergraduate curriculum, graduate students are required to enroll in a minimum number of courses in order to graduate. Keep in mind that there also exist mandatory courses/training that may be required for specific disciplines.

M.Sc candidates by Coursework and Major Paper require completion of at least 4.0 credits (9 courses), of which one of these courses must be the departmental Seminar course (ANSC*6600 - 0.0 credits)**. The Major Paper component of your program has its own course (ANSC*6900 - 1.0 credit) as a placeholder; according to the Graduate Calendar, the major paper will be a detailed, critical review of an area of study related to the specialization chosen by the student and should include analyses and interpretations of relevant data. The content of the major paper will be presented in the Seminar course.

**This course should be completed at the (roughly) second half of your program; it is recommended that you present after at least a partial collection of any data or findings. You will need to book a room (see the Graduate Secretary), and present in front of an audience of any number.
M.Sc candidates by Thesis require completion of the following:
- A prescribed set of courses (minimum 1.5 credits as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies; may be more depending on demands of the advisory committee) - this includes the mandatory Seminar course (ANSC*6600 - 0.0 credits);
- Conduct a research project and prepare a thesis based on the results found; and
- Defend these findings in a final examination (the defence).
In addition to a qualifying exam, a Ph.D candidate may or may not require completion of courses based on decisions made by the student's advisory committee upon consultation with the student. The minimum requirement is completion of the Seminar course (ANSC*6600 - 0.0 credits).
Below are courses that must be completed in order to graduate, in addition to specialized training sessions required to perform select tasks in the laboratory or to handle animals. Upon completion, courses will appear on the student's graduate transcript as proof of their enrolment and completion.

It is required by the graduate student that they are knowledgeable in aspects of animal welfare and that they are qualified to handle animals properly if at any time during their program they will be handling any live animals as part of their study. This course offers a series of online modules designed to introduce aspects of laboratory animal welfare, animal science, as well as laws and regulations set as moral and ethical obligations when using animals for research. Upon entrance of your graduate program, a course titled UNIV*7100 (Academic Integrity) will be automatically added to your CourseLink. This short online course aims to teach or refresh the University's policies on academic misconduct, with added relevance to graduate school. A quiz must be completed and scored above a certain percentage at the end of the course for completion.
This course must be completed before the 20th day of class.

Academic integrity is a code of ethics for teachers, students, researchers, and writers. It is fundamental to the University of Guelph’s educational mission and to ensuring the value of the scholarly work conducted here. This course provides definitions, examples, and exercises to help graduate students understand the importance of academic integrity and learn how to avoid academic misconduct in their own work.
Safety Training (Radioactive, WHMIS, Biohazardous materials, etc.)
You may need to attend and complete sessions and/or workshops and earn certifications before working with radioactive or biohazardous materials in your laboratory. Certain workplaces also require you to complete WHMIS training before conducting any work. These classes are provided by the Department of Environmental Health & Safety here at the University, and can be registered via the Online Course Registration page. Keep in mind that spaces are limited for many of these courses.
Direct handling of specific species will require you to complete a workshop in addition to the Animal User Training core modules from the Animal Care Short Course. Registration is done via Event Link; you will require your own login account, which can be made here.
Note: workshops do not take place regularly, therefore it is recommended that you register and plan well in advance to make yourself available on the chosen dates.
ALL students must be registered into UNIV*7510 (Active Full-time Registration) during course selection before the start of every semester. For thesis students (M.Sc/Ph.D), the course UNIV*7500 (Research/Writing) must also be enrolled at this time - this differentiates for the registrar's office whether you are a coursework or a thesis student.
To plan for the semester, it is recommended that you meet with your advisor regarding enrolling in specialized courses that may be helpful in your research.
All registration for courses are done through WebAdvisor (with the exception of Provisional or Special Status students). If you are a provisional student, you will have to register for courses using the form process as opposed to WebAdvisor; you will be obligated to manually complete an Add/Drop form (Graduate Course Waiver Request) and submit your material in person to Enrollment Services until your Provisional status has changed. This form can be obtained through the Office of Graduate Studies forms website or by visiting Wendy in the ABSc main office. You will require Wendy's signature on this form!
