The Canadian Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep review board is currently accepting public comments on the new draft of the revised codes. The code for sheep was last revised in 1995 and has been under review for the past two years approximately. Given the dated nature of some codes of practice the National Farm Animal Care Council has recently been updating a number of codes of practice for various farm animal species. The codes revision process can be seen here: http://www.nfacc.ca/code-development-process
Through the years many faculty members of the Animal and Poultry Science department have contributed directly, by sitting on the review committees themselves or by sitting on the Scientists' Committees that advise the code review process. The department is continuously contributing to the wealth of scientific research that informs the Scientific Committee for advising the Review Committee.
The review committee is made up of producers, leading experts in livestock science, veterinarians, and members of the public. As part of the process the draft codes are made publically available for comment by any member of society.
Recently the time for public comment on the pig codes of practice closed August 3, 2013 and had an overwhelming response by the public. Conversations were mainly focused on the farrowing crate and how many see it as an unacceptable management practice in current times given the knowledge of animal welfare and the banning of such practices in other countries.
The sheep code of practice however, has had little response and some things in the draft may need your attention. Some areas of possible concern include painful procedures such as castration, tail docking and dehorning as well as acceptable euthanasia methods on farm. If you take quick action by Sept. 6th, 2013 (this Friday) at 11:59 pm, you can go to the Sheep Code of Practice Public Review Site and voice your opinions and concerns for farmed sheep in Canada.
