EPR calculations are based upon a simple linear model that describes the differences in scores between the AWAY team and the HOME team.

(AWAY Score - HOME Score) = mean + (AWAY team) - (HOME team) + error

Team effects are random, but the variance ratio added to the mixed model equations is 1. See the paper by Harville, JASA, around 1976.
